This is a 35 mm movie camera made of wood. Filming was done by turning the handle, allowing the film in the wooden box to pass in front of the lens.
Gaumont, the maker of this camera, is also the founder of the world’s first film company. With the birth of film, cinemas were also born. Movies were shown in everything from small stalls in markets to gigantic movie palaces with full symphony orchestras. By the 1950s, cinema had become the dominant visual medium.
It was the Lumiéres brothers from France who invented the film recorder and projector in 1894.
